Ubisoft reveals Ghost Recon Onlinewas this the reason for delaying Future Soldier? | Posted by Brent on May 26th 11 02:59 AM
Ubisoft just announced at E3 that they are soon to release Ghost Recon Online, a free multiplayer version of Ghost recon that will mark a departure from traditional realistic gameplay for the series. What does this mean for Future Soldier? Coverage on 4 other free play games from big names and the link to get access to the beta.
One clear difference is the addition of buffs for nearby players to encourage team work. Assault players will strengthen the armor of nearby teammates while recon units will improve the range of electronic equipment. These buffs are visualized by blue connectors between players nearby one another.
Do the delay of Future Soldier, the next major Ghost Recon release now marked for 2012, and the development and release of Ghost Recon Online have anything to do with one another? No one can be sure, but I think everyone can agree another year's delay would be not well received by fans, but not out of the ordinary given the past delays on Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell titles.
It's interesting to see so many free play versions of games (Battlefield Play4Free, Quake LIVE, Battlefield Heroes, Need For Speed World). It's obviously brought on by the likes of the iTunes App Store and the Android Marketplaces and backed up by proven success by the various studios. Even Activision Blizzard have not left turning WoW to a play for free model out of the question.
Lead designer of World of Warcraft, Tom Chilton said in 2009, "I certainly think it's possible that we could do some kind of microtransaction stuff." He continued, "Whether we ever shift to a free-to-play model is really too hard to say at this point."
App stores, and yes this is a mutable term, where you can download a controversially better game for free seem to be the model to emulate today. Offer a free game with various microtransactions for better armor, more weapons, more coins, more abilities, and more character slots.Ghost Recon Online Beta Invite Link
