EA's Free Battlefield Game Coming | Posted by djshamrock on Jan 21st 08 09:58 PM
During the Digital, Life, Design Conference in Munich EA uncovered Battlefield Heroes,
what they're calling an "all-new Play 4 Free cartoon-style shooter that will bring classic Battlefield gameplay to an all new mass audience." Battlefield Heroes will be available for download at www.battlefield-heroes.com in summer 2008.
This represents the first game EA's gonna be offering free of charge (oh, the sweet, sweet irony) and also features a built-in matchmaking system "to ensure that players of equal skill are paired together for fair play." Once again, created by Stockholm based DICE, Battlefield Heroes is going to be the flagship title for EA's free to play business model which generates revenue through advertising and micro-transactions (boy, I knew there was something!). DICE, however, cautions players not to worry about ads, as they won't appear within the game itself:
"They wouldn't work inside the fictional world. Instead, adverts will appear on the website and the 'front-end' of the game," Ben Cousins, senior producer at Dice, told BBC News.
Yeah, it sure as hell brings the Team Fortress 2 cartoonish look to mind. Regardless, it seems like a cute idea. The gameplay was adjusted to all gamers. As much as it is to pick up and play, you can also expect robust character customization and "a deep online meta-game."
